Sound art has been around for a while. Yves Klein made sound art. John Cage certainly did. There are two floors exhibiting contemporary sound art at The New Museum of Contemporary Art on The Bowery right now. And this week-end a major installation of sound art pieces collectively titled In The Garden Of Sonic Delights debuted in Westchester—at Caramoor in Katonah and at The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill. I made it to the opening in Peekskill where Livia Straus, Director of the HVCCA greeted visitors at the entrance to 150 N. Water Street, the site of A. Taylor Kuffner’s “Gamelatron Sanctuary.” Mr. Kuffner was also at the door, ready and willing to answer any questions visitors might have about his piece, including, ‘What is a gamelatron?” To see and hear for yourself, make a point of getting to Peekskill some time this summer. And at Caramoor, where I’ll be headed some time in the next few weeks, there are 14 more sound art projects to experience. Between these, the Carl Andre show at DIA Beacon and ever-delightful Storm King Art Center, there’s plenty to do when the galleries go on vacation.
