Now You’ve Done It

Okay, now I’m angry. Now you’ve got me mad. I was able to live with the absurdity that is the Trump fiasco. I was finding my own ways of coping. I was laughing whenever I could and keeping my cool in the best traditions of my people. But Maureen Dowd put me over the top this week. (Sunday Review, The Mooch and The Mogul)
She called the appointment of Anthony Scaramucci “a win for the New Yorkification of the White House.” New Yorkification? These thugs are Us? This absurd distortion of the presidency and all that it should represent is being associated with Us? With New York? Trump and Scaramucci and the rest of the Goldman Sachs-ish lackies who are bent on destroying whatever good this country has ever managed to create are seen as representatives of New York? Really? That we are the home to Wall Street does not make us the parents of the pirates who are plundering our democracy. We tolerate them among us. It’s easy since we don’t go to the same restaurants or live in the same buildings (usually). But New York is not Wall Street and the WSJ is not the paper of record for our city. Trump didn’t win in New York. The Market may be here, but it neither dominates our lives nor represents our values. Hell, we’ve got lots of Markets here. We’ve got the Chelsea Market and The Hunts Point Market and The Fulton Fish Market. We are still the East Village and the West Village and The Lower East Side and Upper West Side. We are still a Sanctuary City.
So let’s not confuse the people whose wealth and sense of entitlement has been nurtured in this city with the city itself. We also nurture musicians and painters and teachers and writers and therapists and chefs and scientists and doctors and actors and….
And, in fact, we’re responsible for the New Yorkification of just about everywhere.
